A dominant Bury opened the scoring in the sixth minute when number eight Ben Holland touched down for an unconverted try.
Ten minutes later, forward Chris Potts gathered from a high kick and linked with full-back Mark Campbell who made 50 metres before Potts received the ball back for a try. Bury added to their score with a penalty five minutes later. The visitors were to score the first of their four tries when a fast ball down the line outflanked the Bury cover for an converted try. The most entertaining try of the game was scored in the 30th minute by lock forward Ian Marshall.
Starting his run 30 metres from the try line, he simply mowed down the opposition to score a try, leaving players scattered quite literally on their backs.
Bury relaxed and conceded a soft unconverted try in the corner but struck back in the next 10 minutes. Try scorers were Campbell, and a double for right winger Dan Scanlon. The first was created by Holland and the second by Wayne Ellaway. Both attempts were converted. After the restart, Bury – with a 27 point advantage – had to face the strong downfield wind. The visitors scored inside the first three minutes of the second half after a succession of rucks and mauls in the Bury left corner eventually resulted in an unconverted try. Bury increased their lead with a penalty with seven minutes of the match remaining and also added a late try.
Having worked the ball into the bottom right-hand corner, Bury were awarded a penalty 10 metres out and opted to take the scrum. They simply drove the opposition over the line with the touch down from flank forward Jordan Miller.
Final score: Bury 44 Newton le Willows 24
