Will Aimson has joined Wigan from Exeter for an undisclosed fee ahead of the upcoming League One campaign.

The 30-year-old has put pen to paper over a two-year deal at the Brick Community Stadium.

Aimson played for the Shakers in the 2018/19 campaign, making 43 appearances before heading to Plymouth.

"It’s been a long time coming and I’m buzzing to finally get it over the line,” Aimson told the club website. “Looking around the place, and meeting all the boys and staff, I couldn’t be more excited.

"There is a journey and a plan that is commencing here, and I want to be part of that."

The Latics finished 12th in League One last season, although they started on minus eight points due to issues off the pitch.

“Will is a fantastic addition to our football club,” manager Shaun Maloney added. “He has great experience in League One and has been a standout performer at Exeter City.

“I have been a long-term admirer of Will, who I know will bring a lot of leadership to our young squad. I am looking forward to working with Will during pre-season and beyond.”

Aimson started out at Hull City and also had spells with Blackpool, Plymouth and Bolton Wanderers before heading to Exeter in January 2023.

He was a key figure in the Grecians' backline last term, playing 43 times in all competitions.

Sporting director Gregor Rioch said: "I am delighted we have been able to secure Will’s signature on a two-year deal. He really pushed to join us and be part of our project.

“He knows all about playing in League One and that experience will be vital for us. I am confident he will fit well into Shaun’s squad.”

Wigan kick off the league campaign with a home fixture against Charlton on Saturday, August 10.
