Walshaw Sports 3 Royton 4
TEN-man Walshaw failed to win their sixth trophy in six years as they lost a thrilling Gilgryst Cup Final at Hyde United on Monday night.
The high-flying Manchester League Premier Division side raced into a two-goal lead inside 30 minutes through Luke Chapman and Kieran Pickup.
But a mistake from Walshaw’s goalkeeper allowed Royton to pull one back.
The Bury boys were reduced to 10 men when midfielder Lee Connell was sent off for a two-footed lunge – and Royton took advantage of the extra man to equalise before the break.
Walshaw looked threatening at the start of the second half, and they retook the lead when talented youngster Aaron Nuttall unleashed an unstoppable shot from 25 yards.
Titterington made it 3-3 from the edge of the box and striker Michael Moss added a fourth with 10 minutes remaining.
Walshaw fought back and Lee Chapman had an effort brilliantly turned away while his brother, Luke, hit the post as Royton held on to lift the trophy.
Meanwhile, Walshaw thumped Bury Amateurs 5-1 to end Ammies hopes of a top-six finish.
Steve Simms scored Ammies’s consolation in their heavy defeat to their neighbours.
Walshaw, who had Dominic Slaven sent off late on, finished the season in fourth.
