ELTON put the league leaders under substantial pressure in the Murray Shield, but one of their best performances of the season wa still not enough.

The Vale formation gradually took shape and not only defended well but were the more offensive outfit, creating chances – the best one falling to Steve Bagwell.

Elton have found this season that when fate is against you, it just carries on. Didsbury’s penalty award was a prime example, none of the players seemed to know why it was given but it gave the visitors the advantage.

The second half started in the same vein but, oh for a striker who can hit the target. Didsbury have one and as Elton started to tire a quick break and cross to the far post resulted in a decisive goal.

Vale’s reserves were also in cup mode at Prestwich and came from behind at half time to finish 1-1 with a goal from Pickersgill. Going behind again in injury time, Foreman scored an equaliser to take the game to penalties. Keeper Chris Bailey then stole the show by saving three penalties and helping Elton into the semi-final.
