This Manchester League Division One match was not an epic encounter by any stretch of the imagination, but it was a strength sapping game played on a wet and blustery day. The visitors, with the wind at their backs, set the pace in the early stages and were assisted by a series of free kicks.

In their first prolonged attack Elton took the lead when Steve Simms worked himself into a good position and his shot from the edge of the area was deflected into the goal.

Chapel pushed on in the second half, making the game a more open affair, but real chances were few and far between.

It took until the 70th minute before Elton secured the win. Simms was put free on the right but saw his shot parried by the Chapel keeper, Marvin Browne’s follow-up was blocked by a desperate challenge, but he had another chance from the rebound. This time a delicate chip was clawed away into the path of substitute Riccardo Williamson who tucked the ball away. Chapel never gave up but Elton’s defence held firm and earned the points to retain a five point margin at the top of the league.

This week Elton look to avenge their only defeat of the season so far when they visit Beechfield, kick off 3pm. The reserves are at home to Royton, while the A team travel to Royton, both 2pm.
