FOURTH Division Maccabi D missed out on a chance to gain ground on fellow promotion contenders Prestwich H when they went down 8-2 at home to Bury GSOB A in the Bury and District Table Tennis League.
It was sweet revenge for the Old Boys who were beaten 9-1 at the hands of Maccabi earlier in the season.
But, just as in the previous encounter, although Tuesday’s scoreline looked convincing, many of the games were tight and the result was much closer than it appeared.
Conversely, the result boosted the Grammar School’s own bid for promotion to Division Three after many years in Division Four.
According to 74-year-old Maccabi man, Aubrey Huller, Bury GSOB were good value for their win.
“I have to admit that the two Warbutons, Barry and Martin – who are not related – are playing really well,” he said.
Huller beat Bury’s Andy Evans and Alan Nesbitt beat Martin Warburton, but that was as good as it got for Maccabi, who also lost the doubles.
