RADCLIFFE AC’s Andy Wheeler travelled to Northumberland on Sunday to take part in the Castles Marathon. He completed the hilly course from Alnwick to Bamburgh Castle in 4.20.13 Wheeler had problems with his right leg at 19 miles but picked up again in the last three miles. He said: “It helped by Bamburgh Castle coming into view, it was looming up and after the last downhill the finishing area came into sight on the green in front of the castle, a magnificent place to finish any event.”
He was pleased with his result after having to pull out of the Ennerdale 50k Trail Race in the Lake District the week before in tough rocky conditions.
Two members battled 60mph winds and torrential rain in the Brecon Beacons in South Wales at the weekend by taking part in the Original Mountain Marathon. John Kirkham and Tony Holt ran with partners as two-man teams in different length classes over the testing two days. Kirkham, in the short score course came 49th out 117. He said: “It was horrendous conditions but I loved, almost, every minute of it.” And Holt who entered a different class with his partner had an overall time of 14 hours out on the hills over the two days putting them in 77th position.
Kris Lee ran the 5k Bolton Parkrun in 24.17 on Saturday putting him in 60th place.
