BURY Athletic Club staged its successful Duerdin Memorial Young Athlete Obstacle Relays at the weekend with the host club taking home a host of medals. The races, held over distances of 1.2km and 1.4km, saw youngsters negotiate a series of obstacles. The event is staged to commemorate the dedication of Vera and Lawson Duerdin to Bury AC over a 40-year period. The club also welcomed ex-athlete, Superintendent Mark Granby, from Greater Manchester Police to present the medals.
In the first race of the day, Bury’s under-9 girls took an excellent silver medal. Isobel Cammish, running the first leg, brought the team home in second with the third fastest run of the day, a position that was maintained by Erin Garroch and Freya Potts.
Bury’s under-9 boys picked up a bronze medal. Fifth after the first leg run by Eddie Siddall, Freddie Worthington moved Bury into the medals with a strong second leg and Charlie Fawcett brought the team home safely in third. The B team of Max Coghlan, Finlay MacDonald and Lex Oliver took fourth place and there was an excellent run on the first leg from Aaron Wynn in an incomplete team.
Bury dominated the under-11 girls’ race from the start. On the first leg, Daisy Worthington ran the third fastest time of the day to give Bury a lead of 13 seconds, which was stretched to nearly a minute by Grace Goodsell. Although she was able to cruise to victory, Charlotte Farnworth then ran the second leg of the day, less than a second behind the fastest runner, to bring Bury’s girls home to a convincing victory. Bury’s B team of Amy Garroch, Alice Lawson and Kathleen Oliver finished in a fine fourth place.
There was an even greater degree of domination in the under-11 boys’ race as Bury swept the medals. The A team romped to victory by over two minutes, with Francis Woodcock fastest of the trio comprising himself, Jerel Livingston and Han Oliver. There was a silver medal for the B team of Joseph Wynn, Callum Beckwith and Bilal Iqbal Willan and bronze for the C team made up of Patrick Clarke, Max Lythgoe and Toby Lythgoe.
The club’s athletes return to action in the Red Rose League at Leverhulme Park on November 9.
