BSF Tennis League Division Two leaders Walmer men’s A team were held to a draw at Tyldesley despite their impressive form.
Adam Gooddy and Paul Biggins maintained their excellent recent run and won sets by 6-2 6-3 before drawing their third.
Ryan Tierney and Phil Mansfield then scored 6-2 6-6 and lost 2-6 to put Walmer in a good position, but Rick Morley and Mike Davies failed to win a set, leaving Walmer to settle for a drawn game at 4.5-4.5.
Walmer men’s B are pushing hard for promotion from Division Four edged a close home match against Ellesmere C 5-4 margin to maintain their challenge. Steve Routledge and Rhys Taylor dominated to win by 6-0 6-2 6-3 and give Walmer the edge, and Wyn Lees and Andy Parton added two sets with 6-3 6-1 wins. It was a struggle for Stu Hardy and Raj Rahman who scored 3-6 2-6 4-6 but it was enough to see Walmer safely home.
The men’s C team have had a good season to date in Division Six and despite a much changed team, they returned from a visit to Markland Hill D with the points. The stand out team were Skipper Stu Donaldson and John Biggins with 6-2 6-1 6-6 scores and Nico Renzuli and Dave Worsley also won two sets. Brian Richards and Jack Suthurst scored 1-6, 3-6, 6-4 to add to Walmer’s 5.5-3.5 winning margin. The men’s D team were at home to Lostock F in Division Seven but were never really in the match. Bruce Hardman and Mike Booth won two sets but the other pairings, Tate and Fairhurst and Peach and Sydall were unable to make an impression as Walmer lost 7-2.
Meanwhile, Walmer’s mixed A team dominated Hawkshaw B at Mosley Avenue. thanks to wins by Morley and Pam Leach, 6-5, Davies and Lisa Morley, 6-3, Gooddy and Dianne Hardman, 6-3 and Biggins and Hattie Morley, 6-4. Gooddy and Biggins then won 6-1, 6-1 and Morley and Davies shared the sets at 6-2, 5-6. The ladies put on more pressure as Dianne and Hattie won 6-0 6-2, and Lisa and Pam won 6-0 6-3 to give Walmer victory by 71-30.
