THE Angling Trust display at Bury Show in Burrs Country Park at the weekend was a huge hit. Many people did not know that large sections of the River Irwell and River Roach were fishable. This was due to the selfless help of local angling societies and rangers.

Eight-year-old Jake Pope won the junior selection match which ran alongside the event.

Meanwhile, Ramsbottom Angling Association’s secretary Allan Warrington has planned several junior matches. Anyone interested in participating should contact him on 07725 195202.

Starmount Lodge (Radclffe): There were catches of decent size roach midweek, while on Sunday a 15lb carp was also netted.

This is a good lodge to fish in bad weather because surrounding trees provide good protection.

Unsworth (Unsworth Angling Club) day ticket: The fishing has been good with some large bream taken using bread. Roach and perch are fishing well but carp are moving a little slow.

The cut is proving a little more difficult to fish. Membership can be bought on the day from the water bailiff.

Scholes Lane (Tottington): This water is fishing well although the weather has restricted numbers. Those who have fished it, have had some good catches of roach, perch and some carp.

Square Lodge (Tottington): Fishing this week has shown a big improvement with some pegs faring better than others, but the bad weather has slowed down the catches to all but the most hardened anglers.

Island and Cartwheel Lodge (Tottington): Both waters are doing well and have picked up on previous weeks. There are favoured pegs on both these lodges, so it is advisable to arrive early to choose.

Pilsworth fisheries (Heywood) day ticket: There have been some good catches this week with overnight fishing available from the water bailiff.

Results for Sunday: 1 Grenville Walker 19.5lb, 2 Tony Heslop 15.5lb, 3 Mike Beatty 15lb, 4 John Allan 14.5lb.

The next open match takes place on Sunday.

Gigg Lane or Maceys (Bury) day ticket: The top lodge has been fishing reasonably good catches of roach, perch and silvers.

In the bottom lodge, carp is still a little slow but there are good catches on high number pegs in reeds.

There is a grand slam tournament every Tuesday evening for which entry costs £12. Pegs are drawn at 5pm.

Last Tuesday’s leg results: 1 John Durran 23lb, 2 Lee Riley 16lb, 3 Barry Halliwell 14lb.

Radcliffe Angling Association: Results for match at Charity Farm pond four: 1 John Howcroft 26lb, 2 Roy Greenwood 20lb, 3 Seb Brunsden 17lb.
