Holcombe Brook’s Simon Roberts inspired an emphatic victory against Manchester Northern to win their final round robin match in the National Aegon Team Tennis.

The Brook’s number one was up against Jonathan Kinsella who had beaten him on the last two occasions the pair had met.

But Roberts, often a slow starter, was quick out of the blocks on Sunday earning two breaks of serve, wrapping up the first set 6-1.

The same pattern continued with Roberts closing out the second set 6-4, to secure a surprisingly comfortable victory.

Singles wins for Chris Parkes and Rob Morgan quickly followed and when Chris Nott, playing at two, beat former British over 35- champion Seb Jackson 6-1 7-5, and the runners-up spot in the round robin was confirmed.

That means, like the Brook’s ladies second team, they will face Scottish opposition in the play-offs for a place in the Bournemouth finals in July.

Tomorrow, Holcombe Brook stage the tennis section of the Bury International Youth competition, with teams from England France and Portugal taking part.
