BURY manager Richie Barker has cooled reports linking him with Bournemouth striker Michael Symes.

The 28-year-old former Everton trainee, who scored four goals on loan at Rochdale last season, is thought to be surplass to requirements on the south coast.

While Barker has gone on record as being on the look-out for a new striker after Mike Grella turned down a contract offer, the Shakers boss has dismissed rumours of a move for Symes.

“He is certainly one that we are aware of, but I haven’t spoken to him,” said Barker.

“Michael fits the bill in the sense that he is available and has a base up here in the north west, but our interest at this stage hasn’t gone any further than that.”

Barker also refused to close the door on Grella, who scored four crucial goals in 10 games for Bury at the end of last season.

The American striker tweeted this week that he had not signed a deal with any club and remained a free agent, despite being linked with moves to Preston, Tranmere, Scunthorpe and Bradford.

“We offered him a contract that didn’t meet his wage demands,” said Barker.

“If he wants to lower those demands then we would be happy to talk to Mike again.”
