Walshaw captain Michael Watt reckons the club’s young guns can help the Sycamore Road club seal the Bolton Association title.

The 23-year-old skipper is proud of Walshaw’s reputation as probably the best fielding team in the league, with only one player aged above 24.

“We’ve got a good, solid, but young side,” said Watt. “We’re always quick in the field and we are a good collective unit.

“We played indoor cricket during the winter and that is helping us now.”

Walshaw boasted a 100 per cent record until 10 days ago when they were beaten at the hands of Astley and Tyldesley.

Then they suffered again on Saturday as the weather intervened to force the abandonement of their home match against Flixton, who had hit 204-7 before the rain closed in.

“It was frustrating lose to A&T, and we were hoping to get back on track on Saturday, but there is nothing you can do about the weather,” said Watt.

Walshaw travel to top-of-the table Atherton on Saturday who - like Watt’s side - have been defeated only once.

But the Bury club are banking on the continued good from of professional and left-arm spinner Dave Bowden, who has taken 30 wickets so far.

They have also been strengthened by the return of opening bowler Nick Murphy after a brief spell with Edenfield, to complete a formidable opening attack with Darren Foy.

They are no slouches in the batting department either, with Ashley Stephenson and Jan Mocke having amassed 250 runs each already and Gavin Nicol - who hit more than 1,000 runs least season - above 200.

“We are confident we can do very well and that we will be there or there abouts at the top come the end of the season,” said Watt.
