SIX Radcliffe AC members joined in celebrations for the Diamond Jubilee when they were among the thousands in the Great Manchester Cycle.

The UK’s biggest timed cycling event covered 13, 26 or 52 miles in laps round the closed city streets with many competitors carrying flags and wearing costumes and facepaint to mark the occasion.

Don Whiley clocked a fine 2:39:45 in the 52-mile event, while, in the 26-miler, Mark Cartwright recorded 1:20:44, Vince Ashton 1:38:46, Kath Davies 1:41:09 and Steve Hamer 1:55:17 after enduring a puncture.

In the 13-mile ride, Iain Harris clocked 52:04 and was second vet-60.

Also joining the jubilee celebrations, Andy Wheeler ran the Jubilee 5k at Preston in a time of 24:30.

On Sunday six club members braved wet and windy conditions in the Rossendale Sprint Triathlon. Cartwright (V40) was first home in 1:29:35 in 61st place out of 195 finishers. The tough course included a 400m swim at the Marls Pit Pool in Rawtenstall, a 21k bike ride and a 5k run.

Hamer (V50) was next in 121st place in 1:43.36 followed by V60 John Kirkham, 134th in 1:46:40, and second in his age category. Donna Cartwright was 138th in 1:47:27, Shauna Murphy (145th) clocked 1:48.50 and Davies (161th) 1:55.34, suffering two time penalites, one for not taking her helmet off at the start of the run and the other for not showing her number properly.

Four others took on blustery, wet and boggy conditions in the Edenfield Fell Race with Peter Potter getting back to fitness clocking 1:02:49, V50 George Critchley in 1:06:51, Mark Murphy (V40) 1:11:40 and V70 Tom West 1:37:27.
