THREE wins from the last four matches have fuelled the belief that Radcliffe can progress well into the top half of the Central Lancashire League table.

Optimism is sweeping through the Racecourse Ground following their five-wicket win at Norden – traditionally difficult opponents for Mark Robinson’s side.

Six-wickets from Michael Burns in a blistering opening spell and three scalps for Stephen Cheetham on a pitch friendly for quick bowling saw the hosts dismissed for a meagre 70 runs.

Perhaps Radcliffe were then guilty of relaxing a little too much as five wickets fell before they reached 72 in what looked like an easy run chase.

“It was a great win,” said skipper Robinson. “You always know that if you can get a couple of the better batsmen out you have a chance.

“It shows that a lot of teams at this level are heavily dependent on their professional.”

Ironically, Norden had won the toss and decided to bat, which makes the Radcliffe achievement more comendable.

“Their pro (M Price) hit three fours in the first over, but Michael got him out in the third over and we managed to take wickets regularly.

“The pitch had a bit of life in it, unlike many pitches in the league and our two lads enjoyed bowling on it. It was good for hostile bowling with plenty of bounce.”

Robinson’s men entertain Rochdale on Saturday, and the Radcliffe captain is hoping his men continue their rich vein of form which has seen them rise into seventh – just below Norden.

Once again, Robinson’s side will be hoping to skittle the fourth-placed visitors, but may have their work cut out after Sri Lankan professional Malinda Warnapura hit 173 not out against Clifton at the weekend. “Getting him out will be our primary objective,” added Robinson.

“We have to push on and keep up the momentum we have had over the past few weeks.”
