WALMER’S mixed B team rounded off the Bolton Tennis League season in style by finishing as champions of Division Four.
It was a fairly even game against Holcombe Brook D with Paul Biggins and Pam Leach winning 6-0, Raj Rehman and Lu Morley victorious 6-3, Rhys Taylor and Sophie Parton losing 6-4 and John Biggins and Sarah Wilde defeated 6-3.
For the men, John and Paul Biggins won 6-0, 6-1 while Rehman and Taylor scored 6-1, 3-6. Leach and Morley added 6-3, 5-6 games to see Walmer to a 54-44 win that secured the title.
The Mixed A and C teams were not as successful but, despite a 57-49 loss to Lostock B, the A team finished the season in a comfortable fourth position in the Second Division. Dianne Hardman and Hattie Morley got Walmer’s best results with 6-3 6-5 wins in the ladies section.
The Mixed C team were always behind in their match with Longsight B at Mosley Avenue.
Sole success in the mixed section came from Ray Tait and Beryl Richards (6-5), but the men’s pairings made no impression on the match.
The ladies lost further ground, despite an admirable return of 6-0 5-6 from Megan Suthurst and Jane Horan.
Despite this loss the team avoided the relegation places in Division Five.
To cap a successful campaign, in which the club’s juniors have also excelled, Walmer’s veterans team retained the Wednesday Vets League title after another memorable season.
