WALMER teams go into this week’s final games of the Bolton Tennis League with plenty to play for as they battle at both ends of the table.
In Division Two of the Mens League, Walmer A lost at close rivals Chorley A with both sides in contention for third spot.
Rick Morley and Mark Booth started well, winning 6-3, 6-3, 3-6, followed by 6-0, 5-7, 1-6 sets from Mike Davies and Adam Goodie. Paul Biggins and Paul Mansfield scored 6-0, 0-6, 5-7 as Walmer went down 5-4.
The mens D team met a young, strong Hawkshaw and struggled throughout in their fight against relegation from Division Eight.
Ray Tait and Dave Worsley, 6-1, and Bruce Hardman and Ian Wilde, 6-3, scored Walmer’s only points in a 7-2 defeat.
Walmer mixed A, eager to cement third position in Division Two, had to settle for a draw with Markland Hill B at Mosley Avenue.
They took an early lead in the mixed section with wins by Mike Davies and Lisa Morley, 6-2, Rick Morley and Hattie Morley, 6-2, and Adam Goodie and Dianne Hardman, 6-4.
They lost ground, however, in the ladies with scores of 2-6, 2-6, from Mandy Winskill and Hattie Morley, and 6-2, 4-6 from Lisa and Dianne.
Results in the mens section were crucial as Morley and Mark Booth scored 6-3, 2-6, and Davies and Goodie 6-1, 2-6 to leave the teams all square on 49 points.
Walmer will need a win next week to have a chance to retain their high spot in the league.
The mixed C team in Division Five have faded after a bright start to the season and their hopes of avoiding the drop suffered a blow as they lost by three games against Barrow Bridge B.
There were impressive wins by Brian Richards and Elle Ward and Mike Booth and Megan Sutherst, but John and Fran Biggins and Ian Wilde and Kate Mansfield lost their sets.
