HOLCOMBE Brook’s men’s team are through to the finals of the Aegon Team Tennis Championships in Bournemouth after beating local rivals Bamford away.
Captain Andrew Davies, from Walmersley, had an anxious time as he waited for the result.
Both teams were joint top of the league with identical rubbers won before Sunday’s matches.
Had they beaten Manchester Northern by a greater margin than the Brook’s 4-2 win it would have been the Wales club who were fast -tracked to Bournemouth.
But there was delight for Davies and his team-mates when the news came through that Wrexham had also won 4-2, therefore securing top spot in the table for the Longsight Road team because, on countback, they had won the head-to-head match.
And victory was achieved without the services of number one Simon Roberts, who was playing league tennis in Germany.
The team built a 3-1 lead in the singles following excellent results by Chris Parkes and Rob Morgan, playing one and two, and Davies delivered an easy win from four.
And the pairing of Davies and Morgan continued their fine form to secure a win that ultimately qualified them for Bournemouth.
