WALMER’S mixed teams suffered contrasting fortunes this week.
The A team were overwhelmed by Division Two leaders David Lloyd (Bolton), with defeats for Mark Booth and Mandy Winskill, 3-6, Mike Davies and Lisa Morley, 3-6, Adam Goodie and Hattie Morley, 2-6, and Rick Morley and Gail Blackburn, 1-6.
Results in the mixed section were closer, with Walmer behind by five games, but the men fell further behind and the visitors ran out worthy winners.
The B team were at Markland Hill and Paul Biggins and Pam Leach opened well with a 6-2 win, followed by 6-5 wins for Phil Mansfield and Lu Morley.
Biggins and Mansfield recorded 6-3, 6-1 wins in the men’s section, before Andy Parton and Rhys Taylor added to Walmer’s total. The ladies continued the trend and took the B squad to a comfortable win.
Hawkshaw were the visitors to Mosley Avenue for the C team fixture and they took all the opening sets as John Biggins and Megan Sutherst, Tim Sutherst and Fran Biggins, Raj Rehman and Kate Mansfield and Julian Nuttall and Jane Pearson all lost their sets.
In the men’s section, Biggins and Nuttall scored 6-2, 5-6, and Rehman and Sutherst 6-4, 2-6, but the ladies were unable to win a set as they lost 66-40.
Walmer juniors lost their first match of the season against the division's top team, Bradshaw.
They started well in the mixed with wins for Jack Sutherst and Sophie Parton, 6-4, and Luke Blackburn and Hattie Morley, 6-3, before Joe Donaldson and Lu Morley lost 5-7, and Dom Siddall and Ellie Ward lost 0-6.
Walmer’s only other set win came in the boys section with a 6-4 score by Sutherst and Blackburn, but the final score of 9-3 was an unfair reflection of the contest.
After the rain had played havoc with matches in the previous week it was the turn of blustery wind to cause problems for the men in week five.
This was nowhere more evident than at Elton Vale where Division Four leaders Bolton Cricket Club were humbled by second-placed Elton Vale A.
