BURY Athletic Club’s youngsters began their track season in impressive style with a series of fine performances in their Young Athletes’ League fixture at Hyndburn.

Star performer of the day was Matty Jones, who recorded three victories in the Under-17 men’s competition. He took victory in the first event of the day in the 100 metres hurdles (19.1secs) and the last event of the meeting in the 1,500m steeplechase (5.42.9mins), with a winning long jump of 5.16m sandwiched inbetween.

Another U17 competitor Nathan Milligan won the 200 metres (24.8), 400m (57.1) and finished runner-up in the 800m (2.10.6).

Danny Sarfraz added valuable points with victories in the B 200m (26.3) and B 400m (60.8), adding a third place in the 100m (12.8). Despite struggling with injury, Jack Brown took second place in the high jump (1.35m), third in the 3,000m (11.26.9) and victory in the B steeplechase race (6.06.1).

For the U17 women, Caitlin Healy was a convincing winner of the 80m hurdles (19.0), following this up with victory in the B 800m race (2.52.1) and third in the 300m (50.9).

Alana Grundy contributed to the team’s score with third place finishes in the 800m (2.46.7), B 300m (54.2) and discus (12.94m). Rounding off an excellent performance from Bury’s U17s, Katie Buckley recorded resounding wins in the 1500m (5.05.5) and 3,000m (11.28.4), adding second place in the javelin (17.65m).

The U15 girls all added valuable points to the overall team effort in their events, as did their male counterparts – Arron Entwistle winning the javelin by more than 10 metres with a throw of 24.66m.

Other impressive performances throughout the day left Bury well positioned for the remaining league fixtures, with the next event in Salford this weekend, 11.30am start.
