THE common consensus in the Bury dressing room was that Tuesday night's heroics against Sunderland will count for nothing if the side revert to form in League Two.

For all the euphoria of the Carling Cup victory, Chris Casper knows he has to bring his side back down to Earth quickly if they are to put some points on the board for the first time this campaign.

Grimsby Town visit Gigg Lane on Saturday having failed to pick up a point on their travels this season and with a heavy midweek defeat against Crewe still playing on their minds.

And from the manager down, the message was clear that the Shakers' new-found belief must be harnessed as quickly as possible.

"We waited a long time for that feeling, but we have to kick on now and take that into Grimsby on Saturday, because there is nothing better" said striker Andy Bishop, after netting the second goal of the night against Sunderland with a clinical finish.

"It won't mean anything if we don't get some points on the board. That means more than anything to us at the moment."

Casper responded to last Saturday's defeat at Wycombe by dropping David Flitcroft and Brian Barry-Murphy from the starting eleven and placing his faith in youngsters David Buchanan and Richie Baker.

His gamble certainly paid off, and the pair look likely to retain their place after attracting words of praise from their manager in the post-match press conference.

Injured pair Marc Pugh (foot) and Matthew Tipton (groin) may well be fit enough for a place on the bench for Saturday, but Dave Challinor still looks doubtful with a bruised foot sustained during a collision in training.

Dwayne Mattis and Chris Brass also took knocks to their ankle against Sunderland and Casper has said he will wait until later on the week until making a decision on their fitness.

Conditioning, says Bishop, has been an area which the squad have been working hard to improve since the defeat at Adams Park - where the Shakers took their tally of second-half goals conceded to nine.

"We have been working on our fitness because we knew we weren't fit enough," explained Bishop. "Our passing was another thing we have worked on in training, and we moved the ball around a lot better.

"The gaffer has been drilling it into us, the way he wants us to play, and it paid off."

Grimsby have confirmed that former Stockport County midfielder Danny Boshell is in talks with Mariners boss Graham Rodger.
