SEDGLEY Tigers’ impressive run of three wins on the bounce came to an abrupt end in a bruising 25-9 defeat at Blackheath.

The Londoners have their sights firmly fixed on promotion and they proved too well-organised for the Tigers, who wilted under a second-half onslaught.

The result left coach Rich Senior disppointed that his side failed to take the chances that had come their way. “We had two or three opportunities to score tries in the first half but didn’t take them, while they took the chances that came their way,” he said.

“We had a man sin-binned and they scored 12 points in that time, which really hurt us. We were architects of our own downfall.”

A try by Blackheath’s flying winger Tyson Lewis and a penalty and conversion gave Blackheath the lead but three penalties by Steve Nutt pegged it back to one point at the interval.

Sedgley lost their composure as the pressure increased and three tries conceded put the game out of their reach.

Saturday sees the visit of second-placed London Scottish, who are sure to pose an equally stern test to the Tigers, but it is one Senior is confident his side can pass.

He said: “When we played them earlier in the season it was a similar game to last Saturday, where we failed to take chances to score but they took theirs.

“We need to find a little more composure and we can beat them. Although they are looking for promotion, it is a very close league.”

Sedgley are hoping for a big crowd to not only cheer them on but to support “Blue Shirt Day”, an initiative to help highlight awareness of male prostate cancer.
