HAROON Khan is jetting off to the Ukraine this weekend as he prepares to represent England in the European Under-15s Schoolboy Championships.
The 15-year-old brother of Olympic silver-medalist Amir Khan will face one of toughest tests to date, but his Bury Amateur Boxing Club coach Mick Jelley is confident of success.
"Harry has got as much chance as anyone else of becoming a champion," said Jelly.
"Harry has been training really hard and I have noticed a big improvement in him during the last few months.
"He has always had the talent, but I thought his fitness may let him down. I think he has turned the corner now, though, and he has come on 100 per cent in the last few weeks.
"He is now as fit as a fiddle and he is listening to the advice he gets given. He is really growing up and maturing and I think he could shock a few people."
Jelley, who is also flying out to the Championships to be alongside Haroon, reckons one of the biggest things for his proteg to master will be his ability to box on consecutive days.
"There are lots of factors to consider when being involved in a Championship like this," said Jelley.
"Harry will have to recover quickly from fights because he may be back in the ring within a day. Travelling can be tiring, and he may come out of fights with injuries. However, he has to dig deep because it can sometimes be the more consistent and brave fighters that win these contests.
"He will also need a bit of luck because he won't know anything about who he will be fighting. He might get a hard fight in the first round and be really up against it. There will be lots of good fighters there from places like Russia, Turkey and Germany.
"But, Harry has the ability. He is his own man and as long as he tries his best, there's nothing more we can ask of him."
And, Jelley doesn't see it as a hindrance to Haroon that his brother is such a high-profile name in the same sport.
"Harry has his own mind, and I don't think it bothers him. He has to carve out his own career, and he knows that," said Jelley.
"I suppose there is pressure to some extent because of how good Amir is, but it is not an issue that has ever cropped up when I have been with Harry.
"It doesn't matter who your brother is once your in the ring."
It will be the first time Haroon has boxed abroad, and he will be hoping to put the disappointment of the ABAs behind him.
In the Golden Gloves Championships in March, Haroon lost the final to Terry Holmes on a controversial points decision.
