CHRIS Casper has fired a broadside at a section of supporters in the Manchester Road End after they called for club captain Dave Challinor to be sent off during last weekend's defeat against Shrewsbury.

The Bury boss was left fuming by the reaction of a small section of fans behind the Shrewsbury goal in the second half who called for Challinor to be given his marching orders for a challenge on Ben Davies.

A penalty was awarded but the defender was only cautioned by referee Terry Ilderton.

After reviewing the incident on video, and talking to the player directly after the game, Casper was upset that the fans had not backed their man.

"The fans pay their money and are well entitled to voice their opinions," he said.

"But I thought the treatment of Dave Challinor was sickening.

"If you call yourself a Bury fan, I cannot understand how you could boo one of your own players and call for him to be sent off.

"I have watched the incident on video and he has run 90 yards to make that tackle, 10 minutes from the end of the game.

"He is one of the best pros I have ever worked with and he does not deserve that type of behaviour."

Challinor did appear to react negatively to the barracking but no disciplinary action will be taken by the club.

Meanwhile, Matt Tipton could be in line for an early recall for Saturday's trip to Wycombe.

The Welsh striker was set to miss the weekend action and Tuesday night's prestige Carling Cup tie against Sunderland with a groin strain. But the injury has responded well to treatment and he may make the squad for the trip south.

Tickets for the tie against Sunderland (kick-off 7.45pm) will be available on the night at Gigg Lane and will be charged at regular admission prices.
