THE next fortnight's transfer activity could unlock a cash windfall for Shakers boss Chris Casper.

Three former Gigg Lane favourites, saddled with sell-on clauses to their existing contracts, are all subject to transfer speculation which could raise some much-needed funds for the cash-strapped club.

If Colin Kazim-Richards, David Nugent or Simon Whaley should move clubs before the transfer window closes on August 31, it is likely Casper would receive funds to bring in more players to boost his squad.

The most likely man to move on would appear to be 19-year-old Kazim-Richards, pictured right, who left the club for Brighton in June, 2005, after making only 11 starts.

The striker has handed in a written transfer request to Gulls manager Mark McGhee after being excluded from the side for the first game of the season against Rotherham.

McGhee has pledged to try and keep the teenager at the club, but should he leave the Withdean Stadium, it is reported Bury would pocket 20 per cent of any profit above the £170,000 fee Brighton paid them.

Wolves and Barnsley have already registered an interest, but McGhee hopes to convince him to stay.

"Barnsley and Wolves may be interested, but the only contact they have made has been through his agent," said McGhee. "They have not contacted me or the club, so until they do, it means nothing.

"If someone comes in with an offer which the board thinks is acceptable, then obviously we would have to consider it but otherwise we would like to keep him at the club."

David Nugent has been courted by Everton - the club he supports - but the Mersey Blues' £8.6 million move for Andy Johnson would appear to have run the coffers dry at Goodison Park.

Portsmouth have emerged as the latest contenders, with a reported £5 million bid in the offing but it remains unlikely that the former Shakers trainee would move to the south coast.

Two goals in three games for the Lillywhites this season have attracted plenty of interest, however, and a goal for England under-21s against Moldova on Tuesday night did little to harm his burgeoning reputation.

Preston boss Billy Davies has confirmed that the club do not need to sell Nugent but a large offer from Pompey - funded by billionaire Alexandre Gaydanak - would surely be difficult to ignore.

Local rivals Bolton Wanderers also watched Nugent score twice in a 3-1 victory over Wolves last Friday night and manager Sam Allardyce is known to have a £10 million pot with which to find a regular goalscorer.

If Nugent did move from Deepdale, Bury would expect to pocket 25 per cent of the profit above the £110,000 handed over by Preston for his services in 2005.

Simon Whaley, also at Preston, has also made an explosive start to the season. The Shakers could pocket 20 per cent of the profit above the estimated £250,000 fee paid in June, 2005.
