SCOTT Quigg has got his rivals running scared, according to the Bury boxer’s coach Brian Hughes.
The 22-year-old won the vacant WBA Inter-Continental super bantamweight title in his last fight and is now preparing to face Frenchman Daniel Kodjo Sassou at the Reebok Stadium on November 26.
With a 100 per cent record of 20 victories, 14 inside the distance, Quigg is rated as one of the brightest stars in British Boxing – but Hughes believes the top fighters are trying to avoid him.
“I am disappointed that Scott has not fought for the British or European titles by now,” said Hughes, who is head coach at Collyhurst and Moston Lads Club.
“The two champions don’t seem to want to know at the moment. One of them, Rendall Munroe, has just lost a world title fight in Japan so he will want to wait until after Christmas now and the other one is not keen either.
“But Scott has been beating everybody put in his way and the two boxing boards will have to intervene soon and make one of them fight Scott.
“I certainly have no qualms about putting Scott into the ring with Rendall Munroe because he is so talented.
“He finds a way around any problem in the ring because he is multi-dimensional. He can fight on the front or back foot, and he is not afraid to box different ways.
“He is brilliant and my dream is for him to fight for the world title one day.”
Hughes believes Quigg’s fight with 30-year-old Sassou, who has lost just once in four years, will be his toughest test to date.“Looking at the lad’s record I think it will be Scott’s toughest test,” said Hughes.
“I have not seen a dvd of his opponent yet but his record is impressive.
“But Scott can deal with him. He is a trainer’s dream – he is one of the few boxers who I have to chase out of the gym, rather than the other way round.
“He wants to learn, he analyses himself in training every day and he hates to get hit.”
Tickets for the fight, priced between £30 and £75, are available from the Hatton Promotions Box Office on 0161 775 7500.
