BOXING’S rising star Scott Quigg will finally fight in his hometown after Bury Council overturned the ban on professional boxing in the town.
The decision means Quigg will headline a show at Castle Leisure Centre on Saturday May 29.
The campaign to bring big-time boxing to the town for the first time since the ban was introduced in 1997 was led by Hatton Promotions CEO Gareth Willams.
“I went to school in Bury and live in Greenmount,” said Williams.
“There is a tremendous interest in sport locally and I am glad the boxing ban has finally been lifted.
“We have been promoting boxing all over the country and I have been telling Ricky Hatton for some time that Bury would be a great venue.
“In the last 12 months, under Hatton Promotions, Scott has made great strides and I could think of nobody better to bring boxing back to Bury.”
Quigg, who is being lined up to box for the European title later this year, said: “It is fantastic that the council have overturned the ban and I am so grateful to them.
“I have a lot of fans and I will get even more now that I can box professionally in Bury.”
