ANDY Morrell has targeted six of the best as the Shakers plot a new course for League One.
A run of eight games without victory has seen Bury slip from a position of strength in the top three, but Monday’s 3-0 defeat of Burton Albion has breathed new life into the club’s promotion push. And Morrell, who scored twice in the defeat of the Brewers, says things are looking up again.
“It’s amazing what difference a few days can make,” said the 35-year-old. “We have got that monkey off our back about not scoring and it is a lot happier place now.
“We had a little meeting on Sunday to reinforce how important every game is and it worked because we won. A lot of us are playing for new contracts but we all want a promotion on our CVs and something we can tell our kids about at the end of our career.
“We nearly got there last year and we have another great chance this time and we don’t want to mess that up. We will never say never in terms of automatic promotion because if we win our last six we are right in it, but it is going to be tough. If we do win our last six we go into the play-offs with high confidence anyway so we would still be happy.”
Morrell, pictured celebrating with team-mate Mike Jones, was delighted to step from the bench and bag his third brace of the season, but admits it was just as important that Bury’s dreadful run in front of goal – a spell of 15 hours without scoring from open play – came to an end with Tony James’s own goal.
“Once we got that first goal you could see the players and crowd were lifted,” he said. “You do go through these things in a season and unfortunately ours is coming at the end of it, rather than with 10 or 15 games ago when we would have had more time to recover. I was saying to the lads on the bench that I can’t remember if I have ever come on and scored, and I did just that – it was amazing really.
“I was disappointed not to start but we have a lot of strikers here and there is a lot of competition about the place. If you are not in the starting 11 or matchday squad you still have your part to play and I hope that is what everybody takes on board from this.”
