ROB Birrell was the best finisher of three Bury-based motor racers to start the season at Oulton Park.

Company director Birrell drove his Caterham 7 single seater clubman’s car into two second-place finishes in both his 20-minute races after qualifying second on the grid for both events.

Meanwhile, Stephen Whitelegg finished 12th out of 30 cars in his “Legends” race. His American-built car is powered by Yamaha bike engines, which all competitors must use.

Whitelegg started racing 20 years ago and was the Northern Champion in 1996 before quitting and making his return 10 years later.

The unluckiest racer on the day, however, was Paul Marshall, who raced his “Haggisspeed” car from the back of the grid in the Classic Clubman into second place before spinning out on the last lap.

His only consolation was the bottle of champagne he received after being voted driver of the day by his fellow racers.
