MICHAEL Jones is aiming to make up for lost time by helping Bury climb back into the top half of League Two.
The 22-year-old winger has cut a frustrated figure on the sidelines after suffering an ankle injury a fortnight into the season, and he is desperate to be back in the thick of the action.
Much of the Shakers’ success last season can be attributed to some fine wing play from Jones and loan ace Elliott Bennett, and the former Tranmere man is determined to show his excellent form in his first full season of senior football was no fluke.
“I’m pleased to be back involved with the lads because sometimes it does get a bit lonely on the sidelines,” said Birkenhead-born Jones.
“There is nothing worse than being out of the team, especially when we are losing, because you feel there is nothing you can do.
“I just want to do my bit to get the team up and running.
“It’s a big season for me and I need to kick on and show last season wasn’t a one-off. I played every game and I feel like this season I am stronger, more confident and know what I am doing so I just have to keep going and aim to be better.
“I think after being here for 12 months I know what is required of me and how the gaffer wants me to play. It’s my job as a winger to put the ball in positions where the strikers can put the ball into the back of the net.
“But, obviously, it’s not just the strikers — we all need to take responsibility, and goals have to come from all over the pitch.”
Jones insists there are no serious problems on the field, despite an indifferent start to the season, and believes it will not be long before the team is battling at the right end of the table.
“I don’t think there is a lot wrong,” said Jones. “We are just getting punished for mistakes we are making and we are not putting our chances away but I don’t think we are a million miles away from where we were last season.
“The lads are still confident, we’re doing the right things and the results will come.
“I just want to play my part now. I have set targets in terms of goals and assists, but I keep them quiet, and I set high standards for myself for every game.
“I got four goals last season and I want more this time. I have scored one so far this term and I want to go on a scoring streak now.”
lBury’s youth goalkeeper Christian Dibble has been selected to play for Wales at Under-16s level in their game with France on September 28.
Dibble, who is son of former Manchester City ace Andy, has been performing well for the Shakers and his manager Geoff Lutley said: “I’m delighted for Christian and we all wish him well for the game.”
