BRIAN Barry-Murphy is hoping to draw on previous happy memories when he lines up at Rochdale on Saturday.
The Shakers midfielder has played his part in four victories and two draws at Spotland since moving to Bury in 2004, and he is hoping for more of the same this weekend.
“Hopefully we can do as well there as we have done in the past,” said the 31-year-old playmaker.
“We have played well there under different managers during my time at the club and, at this level, it’s as big a game as they come in this league.
“Every game is a big game but this one is extra special for some players.
“People think it doesn’t mean anything that you have done well there in the past, but I think it does have a psychological impact.
“If you have done well at a certain ground in the past, you tend to look forward to going back there.
“We have always done well at Darlington, and Rochdale is also one of those grounds we go to in a positive frame of mind.”
Barry-Murphy was bitterly disappointed Bury’s dominance counted for nothing in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat against Grimsby, but the Cork-born ace is backing the Shakers to blast their way out of similar situations in the future.
“The lads were disappointed with the defeat and goal we conceded but some of the football we played was excellent,” he said.
“We just got a little bit impatient and became disjointed and started chasing the game.
“You do look at the clock and start chasing the game and I would like the clock to be taken off the board — it can be a distraction.
“Teams are coming here and giving us more respect than they have done in the past, which is what we want because we want to be a good team.
“I believe we have the players to overcome that and if we repeat Saturday’s performance we will do very well.”
