ALAN Knill has hailed the firepower at his disposal — just one week after facing a striker crisis.

The Bury manager has some selection dilemmas ahead of Saturday’s visit of Grimsby, with five hitmen all pressing to be involved.

It is in stark contrast to his situation last week when he was rocked by an injury to summer signing Danny Carlton that will rule the former Morecambe man out until the New Year.

Since then, he has signed Jordan Robertson on a six-month loan from Sheffield United and youngster Domaine Rouse has emerged from the fringes to stake his own considerable claim.

Ryan Lowe scored his first two goals for the club in Tuesday night’s 3-1 defeat of Hereford and, with returning duo Andy Bishop and Andy Morrell available again, it is easy to see why Knill feels there are plenty of goals in his team.

“It’s a good position to be in at the top of the park,” said Knill, who is also delighted with the form of his wingers David Worrall and Michael Jones.

“If the back lads can do their job, we think we have got plenty of firepower. We are reasonably happy that we have a good squad that can cope with this league.

“The team is nicely bonding together, but there is still more to come and we think we can do better. “I have got six strikers and four wingers, and I have never been in this situation before. We are moving forward, which is the big thing.

“I thought I had four strikers to pick from after Danny’s injury, but I have five with Domaine. He was excellent on Tuesday night and he showed he has got something.

“We have always seen that talent and it’s coming through now. Every time he got the ball he looked dangerous and he has given me a big dilemma considering what I have got now.”

Things are looking up for the Shakers after a disappointing opening to the season, and Knill is happy with the response of his players after defeats to Bournemouth and West Brom.

“All of a sudden, after two wins, it doesn’t look like a bad start,” said Knill. “We have got some momentum back now and our confidence is back, which is the biggest thing.

“The players are now looking relaxed and passing the ball about. They are playing naturally again.

“I have spoken to people who have been in the play-offs and missed out and quite a few have said it takes a while to get going again.

“It is a struggle to get things going again and we are finding that. We need to take the away performances back to Gigg Lane now.

“We had one of the best home records in the league last season, and that is where I want to win and entertain.”

Jordan Robertson, who was missing on Tuesday night due to personal problems, will come back into the squad for the visit of Mike Newell’s Grimsby, with Morrell and Bishop likely to be on the bench. Damien Allen is still sidelined with a groin strain.

Meanwhile, Bury have been drawn away to Walsall in the first round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy on Tuesday, September 1, kick off 7.45pm.
