FORMER Shakers favourite Dean Kiely believes Bury have the ability to reach League One this season.

The 38-year-old goalkeeper, who was part of the Gigg Lane team that won back-to-back promotions in the 1990s, saw his old team at close quarters when he played for West Brom in Tuesday night’s Carling Cup clash.

The ex-Republic of Ireland international, who went on to make 220 appearances for Charlton Athletic in the top two divisions, still keeps a close eye on his former club’s fortunes and credits them for setting him on the path to a successful career.

“It was my 750th senior appearance on Tuesday so it was fitting that it was back here because I have a lot of fond memories,” said Kiely. “The club gave me the opportunity to play and I kicked on from there.

“I know how big a part Bury played in my career and I thought the reception I got was good.

“I hope Bury are on for another promotion push. I followed them last year and I was disappointed when they just missed out.

“I think there’s a structure here and a squad in place that can challenge in League Two and I’m certainly hopeful for them.”

Kiely was given a fantastic reception by the Gigg Lane faithful on his return, and he admitted he was moved by the fans’ response.

“It means a lot to get a good reception because, as the seasons tick by, people forget what happened 10 or 12 years ago,” said Kiely, who keeps a record of every one of his 244 career clean sheets. “But, in a quiet moment, I don’t forget. I had good times here and playing in the Championship with Bury was a fantastic time for me.

“It was a golden era. There were some fantastic players here and there was a good work ethic, and everybody got on well on and off the pitch.”
