PRESTWICH Heys suffered an agonising last-gasp 1-0 defeat at Burscough on Tuesday night.
After a hard-fought contest, the hosts took all three points with a goal with the last kick of the game to condemn Heys to a third straight loss.
It was harsh on Heys who acquitted themselves well throughout but they were again left to reflect on missed opportunities.
Sonny Reeves saw a shot come off the outside of the post in the 14th minute and Jordan Southworth fired over from close range in the 35th minute.
Burscough themselves had chances through Dawson and Uppal which they couldn’t take as the first half ended goalless.
The second half was one of few chances for either side and as the game entered six minutes of added time the fine margins that exist at this level were fully exposed.
In the 91st minute Luc Ferry had a great chance for Heys but fired wide from close range. A goal then and the points were coming to Prestwich.
However, in the closing seconds it was the hosts who celebrating. Heys keeper Louis Hood initially made a great save to parry a shot to his to right but when the ball was reworked it found Che Trapasso-Tully on hand to score with a free header at the far post and give his side the points.
At the weekend, it was another difficult day for struggling Heys as they slipped to a 4-1 defeat to Padiham at the Ruby Civil Arena, writes Rick Barrett.
Heys came into this one looking for a response after a 3-1 reversal at home to the Isle of Man the previous Tuesday while Padiham were looking to improve after a 4-1 defeat to Ramsbottom United and with both teams on seven points at this early stage of the season it was all to play for.
It was the hosts straight out of the blocks and they were in the lead as early as the 10th minute, poor defending on the left from Prestwich meant the ball fell to David Sherlock who buried his shot, bottom right, past Heys keeper Louis Hood.
The visitors tried to respond just after with Adam Dahou, down the left, putting in a deep cross but no one could connect and on sixteen minutes, with Heys enjoying a good spell of play, Dylan Fitzgerald was in on the action, having a cross cleared and Ed Schryburt had a shot saved at the far post.
Padiham were looking dangerous on the break and ex-Heys Man Kieron Molloy whipped in a couple of crosses down the right to no avail but Heys kept pressing, Shay Stansfield firing wide. The visitors were very unlucky on 29 minutes when a Fitzgerald shot was deflected for a corner which found Kian Sharples, whose shot rattled the underside of the cross bar and bounced out to safety. This was to be a key moment in the half.
Back came Padiham and it was Sharples in the action again, at the other end, making a vital clearance for a corner, but as has become a regular occurrence this season, Heys failed to clear their lines and the in-swinging corner found Ben Hoskin who headed past Hood for 2-0.
Prestwich were not giving up though and pulled one back on 38 minutes, when a ball in from the left found Dahou who slotted home at the far post to get the visitors back in it.
The hosts should have been further in front before the break however, as Molloy fired over the bar from three yards to a bemused look from the sizeable home crowd.
Heys came out for the second half looking for that early goal to get level with Schryburt firing wide on 52 minutes. Joint managers Russ Saunders and Matty Russell decided on a more attacking tactical change three minutes later bringing on Sonny Reeves and Jordan Southworth for Callum Graham and Richie Makelele.
It was Padiham looking more dangerous going forward though and they were awarded a penalty on 63 minutes, Sharples fouling inside the box and it was Hoskin who converted the penalty past Hood for his second of the day and Padiham's third.
From here on in it was the hosts who pushed on as Heys seemed to look lost with the change in formation and it was keeper Louis Hood was a busy man making three key saves including a shot blocked with his legs and a terrific save, tipping round at the far post, on eighty two minutes to keep Prestwich alive and in turn getting the visitors man of the match award.
With a minute to go, Jack Price completed Heys misery converting from close range after the visitors again failed to clear, which was to be the final action of the afternoon as the referee blew for full time.
Heys will look to bounce back on Friday night when they host Glossop North End at Adie Moran Park (7.45pm). The visitors are one point and one place above Heys in the table.
Monday night sees Heys in action again at Stockport Town (7.45pm)
