Two members of Bury AC were on international duty last week with Luke Harreld representing Great Britain at the World Masters Championships in Gothenburg and Jay Cook competing for England in the shot put at the Under-20 International in Eton.

Harreld took part in the M35 800m, taking the lead at the bell but not able to match the finishing kick of the first two athletes and he crossed the line in fourth in 2mins 3.30secs, missing out on the final.

Cook took second place on his England debut with a best attempt of 13.40m.

Another Bury athlete competing at Eton was Oliver Cooper, taking part in the U15 boys’ octathlon, winning bronze in a new personal-best point score of 3,905. He set event PBs in the high jump (1.60), javelin (38.60) and 1,000m (3.18.68).

Bury’s senior team travelled to Ellesmere Port on Saturday for the final North of England League fixture of the season and finished in sixth at the meeting and sixth overall, resulting in relegation to the First Division next season. There were event victories for Caitlyn Johnston (B 800 - 2:25.6 and B 1500 - 5:00.1), Susan Wheeldon-Gorst (B 2,000m steeplechase - 10:15.2), Halle Davies-Ferneyhough (A javelin - 28.90) and Lucy Hill (B javelin - 23.53, B discus - 17.31). Peter Gardner ran well to take second in both the A 400m hurdles (59.0) and A 400 flat (53.3), while Martin Clark was second in the A 5,000m (15:25.7). Vital points were secured by Conor Wilkinson and Christian Peters in the middle-distance events and youngsters Ben and Mae Gardner both performed well in the field events. Sprinters Harvey Rossington-Rose and Rocksan Minkeng also had a busy afternoon, while Mike Hunter, Bev McAuley and Lewis Major took on different events to maximise scoring opportunities. Team manager Byron Edwards was philosophical about the performance for the season, given many athletes were missing.

On Sunday, Bury hosted a Medal meeting for Trafford AC which saw several club youngsters produce some excellent performances. Abel Kibuuka, making his debut for the club, made it a double victory in winning his heats for the 100m (12.38) and 200m (25.44), while Ethan Statham was the runaway victor in the 1200m with 3:55.11. Violette Overlunde won the long jump with 3.38 and set a PB of 22.47 in the 150m, and Ben Clarke won the javelin with 46.63. Luke Drinnan won his heat of the 200m (26.04 PB) and took third in the 100m (12.55). Seb Hunt, making his debut, took eighth in the 600m with a new PB of 1:59.99 and Solomon Evans took fourth in the 75m hurdles in a new best of 15.70 and third in the 150m with a PB of 23.64.
