Prestwich Heys suffered an agonising last-gasp defeat to AFC Liverpool at Adie Moran Park on Tuesday night.
In a keenly contested contest it looked that the match was destined for a goalless draw but with practically the last kick of the game the visitors snatched victory.
It followed Saturday’s 2-1 at Cheadle Town which was also settled by a late winner.
Both sides showed plenty of endeavour but it was a night when defences ruled the roost as their respective attacks floundered.
Indeed it was not until after the half hour mark that there was a serious threat to goal as Heys keeper Louis Hood pulled off a smart save to keep out Elliot Taylor before the ball was worked back into the box and his follow up came off the bar.
Heys responded by going close themselves when Dylan Fitzgerald cut into the box but his shot was well saved by the legs of AFC keeper Jack McGovern.
The second half continued in a similar vein to the first as both sides struggled to find a way through in attack. The closest to a goal came on the hour mark when Heys centre half Shay Stansfield looked set to score an own goal when his back header was wide of keeper Hood. However, Stansfield recovered superbly to clear off the line.
As the game entered the final quarter it was the visitors looked to be carrying the extra edge and Bradley Shearwood saw a shot deflected wide. As the game became stretched Heys were the next to go close when three minutes from time Kade Hargreaves exchanged passes with Ivan Egharevba to break into the box but his shot found the side netting.
As the game moved into added time, however home hearts were to be broken. Four minutes of injury time had elapsed when a free kick was swung into the box and when the ball dropped to Bobby Murphy, ten yards out, to drill the ball home and clinch victory for the visitors.
Heys are in FA Cup action on Saturday when they travel to Stocksbridge Park Steels in the Extra Preliminary Round (3pm). If the tie is drawn, the replay will be at Adie Moran Park next Tuesday (7.45pm).
