Bury’s combined event star Jay Cook competed at the English Track and Field Championships in Birmingham over the weekend, writes Mark Granby.
He was in the Under 20 men’s shot competition where he blasted out a new personal best putt of 13.81m to take a superb third place. The Championships also combined as the inter counties competition and Jay also took a gold medal for Greater Manchester as a result of his performance. The result sets the Loughborough student up well for next weekend’s Decathlon.
On Wednesday, Bury hosted the third of its Mini League competitions for young athletes. Over 100 youngsters from local clubs participated in the competition, organised by coach Helen Vaughan, with the event growing in popularity. There were some excellent performances from Bury athletes with quite a number winning medals. On the track gold medals went to Violette Overlunde (u11 girls 80m and 150m), Hugo Wells (u11 boys 80m and 150m), Isaac Abeng (u9 boys 150m), Mylah Collier (u11 girls 600m) and Ella Straffon-Finch (u13 girls 800m). Silver medals went to Rahmese Knight (u9 girls 80m), Isaac Abeng (u9 boys 80m), Lila Metcalfe (u9 girls 150m) and Luca Abeng (u11 boys 150m). Bronze medals went to Niamh Murray (u11 girls 600m), Lois Green (u13 girls 150m) and Rahmese Knight (u9 girls 150m).
In the field events gold medals went to Rahmese Knight (u9 girls long jump), Hugo Wells (u11 boys long jump), Violette Overlunde (u11 girls long jump and javelin) and Lois Green (u13 girls javelin). Silver medals went to Lila Metcalfe (u9 girls long jump), Luca Abeng (u11 boys long jump), Mylah Collier (u11 girls long jump and javelin) and Ella Straffon-Finch (u 13 girls javelin). Bronze medals went to Rocco Balsamo (u9 boys long jump), Rose Freeman-Hart (u13 girls long jump and javelin) and Jasmine Brisbane (u11 girls javelin).
A number of Bury’s endurance squad ran the 5k parkrun at Heaton Park. Martin Clark was the fastest finisher with 16.44 with Alia Braithwaite fastest woman with 19.05.
