Ramsbottom boxer Ella Thompstone has become a senior English national champion aged just 18.
The teenager, who fights out of Leigh ABC under the guidance of coach Adrian Fleming, has win the national title in the 63kg weight class after a tough road to the final.
She faced stiff competition at every stage winning a total of six fights in six weeks, to secure her place in the championship bout.
Her journey began with the Regional Championship on Saturday, March 16, where she proved her mettle in the ring with each successive victory.
In the Northern Area final two weeks later, Thompstone won against Amelie Garcia to progress to the national quarter and semi-finals held at the Barnsley Metrodome on April 13 and 14.
She went toe-to-toe with the experienced Sam Perkins, delivering a performance that showcased her skill and determination to win through and in the last four she had her biggest challenge yet, facing the number one seed and England number one, Terri Stewart. In an electrifying match, Thompstone won by a 3-2 split decision, booking her place in the final in Derby on April 20.
Again she dominated number two seed Jasmine Poole to triumph by a unanimous points decision, claiming the title of English Senior National Boxing Champion in the 63kg weight class.
She will now represent England at the Tri Nations competition in June and also be assessed to join Team GB.
Meanwhile, it was also a great day for her Leigh stablemate, Will Hewitt, who won the 60kg male crown.
