A squad of 25 athletes from Bury travelled to Ashton on Sunday to endure the sweltering temperatures at the third Cheshire Track and Field League fixture of the season.
With the programme reduced as a result of the hot weather and with many athletes missing, Bury did well to take third place in the competition with the under 11s taking fourth.
There were a number of noticeable performances from Bury athletes. The standout was Blessing Idoko in the under 15 girls events who won the 100m (13:1secs), the high jump (1.35m) and the shot (7.60m).
Lois Wormald, competing in the under 13 girls events produced a league best performance winning the 100m A race in 13:9.
It was the under 13 girls group that were the highest scoring of the day with Gabriella Idoko winning the B 100 (14:1) and a clean sweep in the 800 A to D races of Faye Gribbin (2:31:7), Lucy Dent (2:38:7), Isabella Robinson (3:09:2) and Scarlett Hunter (3:17:0). Second places went to Gabriella Idoko (A long jump 3.92m), Lucy Dent (B long jump 3.52m) and Isabella Robinson (C 100 15:0).
Ella Watson made it a double in winning the senior women’s 100 (13.7) and long jump (3.91m). Adam Warren won the under 17 men’s shot (8.00m), Sammy McBride-Duerdon won the under 11 boys 75 m (11:7) and Erin Hudson won the under 11s A javelin (11.63m) with sister Amber winning the C (6.16m).
In the under 17 women’s events Lucy Hill had a great performance in the discus taking 2nd with 13.32m and then 4th in the 100m (15:2).
Other team members securing vital points were Mike Hunter (senior men 800m), Jack Parker (under 15 boys 1500m), Lorena Hunter (under 15 girls shot and 800m), Ben Clarke (under 13 boys high jump and shot), Jenson Brady (under 13 boys 200m and 800m), Ellis Thompson (under 13 boys 800m), Ethan Statham (under 11 boys 75m and long jump), Kathryn Wolstenholme (under 11s javelin), Isla Gribbin (under 11 girls long jump and javelin) and Ruby Dent (under 11 girls 75m).
Bury’s volunteer officials also secured vital team points.
Earlier on in the week at the Trafford Open meeting, Matthew Lowe secured victory in the 800m E race setting a new personal best of 2:10:64. Emily Purdy was third in the under 15 girls 1500m with 4:52:59.
At the Wirral Open Meeting under 13 Lucy Dent set two new bests taking third in the 800m (2:37:9) and 5th in the high jump (1.20m). She also won the 70m hurdles in 14:4. Evie Elliott also tested herself over the hurdles taking 2nd in the under 15 girls 75m event with 12:2.
