Shakers phoenix club Bury AFC have announced a virtual fundraising match in conjunction with Scottish giants Rangers.
The esports match on Saturday, July 4 will support the Shakers Community Society attached to Bury AFC, the Rangers Charity Foundation and the Lee Rigby Foundation.
The online encounter will see legends from both teams in action with supporters able to tune in.
Fans of each team will take control of their favourite players with the sides playing for the inaugural Lee Rigby Foundation Trophy.
The bond between the two sets of supporters dates back to the Shakers’ friendly at Ibrox in 2018.
“This game is, to this day, looked upon with great fondness across the supporter base of both sides – particularly by those Bury fans who had a great day in the Glasgow sunshine and saw their team turn out in front of 40,000 passionate football fans,” a Bury AFC statement read.
“It certainly left a lasting impression between the two groups of supporters and the decision to stage this virtual friendly required little consideration from all sides when proposed.”
You can get tickets for this match in the form of a donation, starting from £1, with no limit on the amount you can pledge.
The phoenix club’s Community Board held their first meeting earlier this week with news awaited on their application to play in the North West Counties League next season.
Formed following Bury’s expulsion from the EFL last August, it is expected their football operation will step up in the coming weeks.
Monies raised will be invested in local community projects, a game against Chester set for May having been shelved due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Lee Rigby Foundation provides support to bereaved families of military personnel and will be putting their share towards the purchase of a number of static caravans to provide affected families with respite facilities.
Rigby served in Cyprus, Germany and Afghanistan as a member of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, which to this day has a base within the town of Bury.
The Rangers Charity Foundation offers a wide range of charitable community programmes and will use the funds generated to continue to deliver their work both locally and around the world.
Ticket holders will receive a digital matchday programme covering the game and exclusive access to the ‘FanCam’ enhanced match footage in time for kick off, which is at 3pm.
