RYAN Lowe feels his Bury squad have already written themselves into club folklore – regardless of whether they clinch promotion.
After losing at Newport on Good Friday, the Shakers beat Northampton on Easter Monday to climb back into the top three.
On Saturday Bury visit Tranmere, where they last clinched promotion on a dramatic final day in 2015, knowing victory could secure an immediate return to League One with a game to spare.
Mansfield and MK Dons go into the penultimate weekend a point behind Lowe’s men and face each other on the final day so cannot both claim maximum points.
But the Shakers have already secured at least a play-off spot, as well as reaching the Checkatrade Trophy semi-finals and scoring over 100 goals.
The club has also been hit by financial problems in recent weeks, which threatened to scupper the team’s promotion push.
“I’ve told the lads that whatever happens, wherever they go and whatever we do in life, they’ll be remembered – at the club, by me as the manager,” said Lowe. “To score 102 goals, with two games to go, just shows the work we’ve done. The players are putting their bodies on the line.
“Circumstances have been tough so I can’t thank them enough, they’ve been superb.
“It’s been tough for the fans as well but they’re rallying us on, I’ve had so many messages, so we want to do it for them. Without going into details, last year wasn’t good enough (relegation); this year it’s been good enough, and I think they deserve it.”
The PFA’s League Two team of the season was named on Wednesday and includes Bury keeper Joe Murphy, as well as midfield pair Jay O’Shea and Danny Mayor.
Nicky Adams does not feature, despite having the most assists in the EFL, but the local lad could win his second promotion with the Shakers, having been part of the 2014/15 squad.
“I’m fortunate to be with this set of boys,” said the 32-year-old midfielder. “We had a blip but the gaffer’s never been disheartened. He’s always stayed positive, no matter what’s happened off the pitch.
“The fans will go to Tranmere in their numbers now.
“We’ve got great memories there so hopefully we can get a positive result and give them something else to cheer about.”
