FORMER Bury Golf Club captain and president, Peter Dawson, is set to be the new president of the Bury and District Golf Association (BDGA).

Dawson, who turns 80 this year, will be announced in his new role at the association's annual general meeting at Greenmount Golf Club next Thursday.

The Huddersfield-born golfer will succeed Dot Scholes, who was the first woman to hold the post on her election two years ago.

Dawson was born in 1939 in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire and was called to the bar of Gray's Inn in 1971.

He was Clerk to the Bolton Justices from 1979 to 1999 and awarded the MBE in 1991.

Dawson was president of the Justices' Clerks' Society in 1994 and has been a marriage guidance counsellor – and recently a bereavement counsellor.

A member of Bury Golf Club since 1979, he was captain in 1988, president from 2000 to 2002 and then captain of captains for the Bury district in 2003.

He currently plays off a handicap of 17 with his lowest being 10.

Dawson' first wife, Marie, died of cancer in 1992.

He then married Nora in 2001 – she has been lady captain of Stand and twice lady captain of Bury.

Dawson has two daughters, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

The BDGA consists of eight golf clubs within the Bury area – Breightmet, Bury, Greenmount, Harwood, Lowes Park, Pike Fold, Rossendale and Walmersley.
