BEN Leonard is still in shock after his dream move from Sunday League football to the professional game with the Shakers.

Just over a fortnight ago, the 23-year-old from Sheffield was preparing for a night shift plastering in Stoke on Trent.

But in true Roy of the Rovers style, he was spotted playing parks football by chief scout, Gary Simpson, and given a one-year contract at Gigg Lane.

The move from Packhorse Celtic to Bury was quite a culture shock for Leonard, who has also played in the North East Counties League with Hallam FC and Dinnington Town.

But after getting his first proper look at the Gigg Lane pitch from the bench in the 0-0 stalemate with Blackpool at the weekend, the down-to-earth Yorkshireman is determined to grab the opportunity with both hands. Leonard said: "Gary, Keith (Alexander) and the gaffer (Chris Casper) have seen something they like in me and they have taken the chance.

"I owe them a lot, but I know I can make the best of this. I know supporters will have their doubts, but I'd ask them to be patient with me and give me a chance."

Leonard classes himself as a "grafter," and judging by his performances against Radcliffe Borough and Hyde United which earned a season-long deal, he is certainly not a player worried about putting his foot in where it hurts.

Even though the crowd was sparse in the goalless draw with Blackpool, it was still some way from the Meadowhall Sunday League. The game itself was a tame affair, but Shakers boss Chris Casper said he was proud of the attitude his side showed in the second half as the Championship side turned the screw.

"Blackpool brought on some Championship-quality players in that second half, but we looked strong and I'm really pleased we didn't lose the game," he said.

"We are looking really hard to beat at the moment, and Simon Grayson (Blackpool boss) said afterwards that he was very impressed with our workrate and attitude."

In a game of relatively few chances, Richie Baker had the best of the lot, forcing Rhys Evans into a full-length save on 78 minutes.

Jim Provett had a good afternoon in his first game as an official Bury player, denying Scott Vernon and David Fox in the second half.
