RICHIE Clarke could be just out of the Shakers' grasp, admitted Chris Casper.

The Newry City midfielder enjoyed a successful trial spell at Gigg Lane a week ago, scoring in the club's 1-1 draw with Hyde United.

After returning to Northern Ireland, the 22-year-old moved on to play a friendly for Championship side Sheffield United against Portadown, although Blades boss Bryan Robson has since pulled out of the running for his signature.

However, Gillingham and Scottish giants Rangers are also reportedly in the hunt, and Casper admitted the Shakers would have to wait in line before being able to table an offer.

"He's maybe just out of reach for the minute," said the Bury boss. "I think he has enjoyed his time here and he is a sensible lad.

"Would he get swallowed up at a bigger club? Only Richie knows that.

"If nothing happens at the bigger clubs then that might be an indication that something could come along for us."

Someone who knows all about Clarke's ability is his international team-mate, Shakers midfielder David Buchanan, who played alongside Clarke for Northern Ireland against Moldova this summer.

And the Bury man believes he could be a hit in English football.

"He is a very good footballer," Buchanan said. "He is very comfortable on the ball and works hard, which says a lot about the standard of football in Northern Ireland.

"Keith Alexander has brought over the likes of Jeff Hughes and Gareth Macauley in the past, and they have shown that there are some real gems over there if you look for them."
