Bury Broncos travelled to Woolston Rovers in the NWML Trophy and a strong second half performance saw them into the cup quarter final.
The home side scored first early on capitalising on some weak defensive play but fears recent poor form would continue were soon put to rest. Great defence by Joe Wilkinson and carrying from Jonno Taylor and Matthew Fish put the Broncos well back in the game before a good break by captain Martin Wilcock gave Joe Wilkinson the chance to muscle over the line; Blake Roberts goaled the conversion to level the scores at 6-6.
The Broncos were now dominant but found themselves unable to put any daylight between the scores with tries from John Brookes and Steve Critchley quickly replied to by the home side to leave the scores tied at 16-16 at half time.
However, the second half saw Bury canter into the lead with an early score to cap a great performance from Jay Hardman quickly followed by a fast and elusive run from Blake Roberts who converted to make it 26-16. Further scores followed from Jonno Taylor crashing over and a brace from Sean Kelly who got rewards from supporting breaks by Rick Brogan and Martin Wilcock making it 42-16 as the end of the game approached and although Woolston hit back with a couple of late tries to pull back to 42-28 but by then the result was never in doubt.
The Broncos under-8s and under-9s were both in action at the weekend, putting in spirited performances despite defeat to Golborne Parkside and Halton Farnworth Hornets. Anyone interested in playing for the club at any age can contact Ryan Lewis on 07534 934321 or email contact@burybroncos.co.uk.
