With just two months to go until the new tennis season gets underway at Hawkshaw, the club is looking for budding Andy Murray’s to dust off their rackets and join them.
The Bury-based club have four men’s teams, four mixed teams and two junior teams competing in this season’s Bolton League.
The club is also entering a men’s team into this year’s Lancashire County Aegon event, and two ladies teams will play in the North Manchester League.
Hawkshaw has five all weather tennis courts – of which three are floodlit. There are also changing rooms and shower facilities available in the clubhouse.
League matches are held at Hawkshaw between April and September, with the club also hosting a summer tournament.
Members enjoyed plenty of success last season with the Mixed ‘A’ team – including Lisa Cartwright, Andy Lee and Ed Brown – finishing runners-up to Holcombe Brooke in Division One.
Last year’s summer event saw 136 matches played, with many individual prize winners. Andy Lee, was crowned the men’s singles winner, while Dave Walker and Ed Brown won the men’s doubles honours.
Louise Calland was the ladies singles winner with Pauline Teasdale and Nicola Vilathorne winning the ladies doubles.
Issy Waite was awarded the over-17s trophy, while Andrew Rafferty won the boys under-14 award with Elissa Shang winning the age group for the girls.
Other award winners were: Emma Rayner (girls u12s), Finley Thomas (boys u12s), Lucy Pixton (girls u10) and Piers Skeels-Caldwell (boys u10).
Emily Chicken and Joseph Patel were presented with a sporting award.
Hawkshaw coach, Lisa Cartwright, runs two weekly sessions for adults from beginners to team players.
She also runs a weekly junior session with numbers varying from around 12 to 30 turning up each week.
In addition, the club holds special summer camps for youngsters aged between five and 16 throughout the six-week holiday period, with more than 100 children attending last year.
Cartwright said: “Members or non-members are welcome to come along to any of the adult coaching sessions, the junior sessions or the summer camps.”
Adult sessions take place on a Thursday from 6.30pm to 8pm and on a Sunday from noon until 1.30pm.
Junior coaching is held every Sunday from 11am until noon.
