Premier Division title contenders Bury Blue Devils ran out successfuil winners against lower opposition, Thornleigh, in the MABL cup competition.
With a full squad, Bury had the advantage from the start with big men Stu Jackson and Conor Wilkinson hitting the target inside, as Charlie Cuthbert and Graham Greene found the target from long distance, to help Bury to a 23-13 lead after a quarter.
Newcomer Paolo Ruflo and the returning Kin Lin Ming used their quickness to challenge the defence as brothers Chris and Phil Stainton settled into scoring roles. Defensively Ergoli Togo and Dave Avery limited the visitors options, holding the visitors to only two points to take a commanding 55-15 point half time lead.
Defence always wins games and the full court allowed the quick Jay Knowles and Phil Stainton easy baskets. Six consecutive hustle points from Avery extended the lead as Bart Szarejko held his own in the paint defensively.
With all cylinders firing Bury finished off the game with an 18 to five spurt with Jackson scoring for the 100th point.
Coach Mike Nichols said of his team’s performance “Although an easy game, the guys stepped up defensively when asked and although the game was a blowout in our favour, Thornleigh fought hard to the end and never gave up. Respect to their sportsmanship.”
The final score of 112-37 reflected the span between the two clubs.
