JORDAN Mustoe says he is “excited” about his future at Gigg Lane, despite only having one game left on his current loan deal.

The 22-year-old left-back tasted victory against Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday for the first time since he joined from Wigan Athletic.

Bury also scored their first goals since the Birkenhead-born player’s arrival and he must have wondered what he had let himself in for when Kevin Blackwell was sacked two games into his six-match spell at Gigg Lane.

The last of those matches is due to be Saturday’s home game against Alan Knill’s Torquay, but Mustoe is now eager to extend his stay.

“I’ve told him (caretaker boss Ronnie Jepson) that I’m enjoying it here and hopefully we will have a chat in the week,” said Mustoe, after Saturday 2-1 win at Adams Park.

“It’s up to Ronnie. If he wants me then we will have a word with Wigan to see if I can stay until January or the end of the season.

“I’m willing to stay. The lads are great. We have got a very good team here. We’re high in confidence and I’m excited for the future.”

Mustoe cannot have found it easy settling in at Gigg Lane after being brought in to replace veteran full-back, and captain, Gareth Roberts.

In fact, former manager Kevin Blackwell’s insistence on playing Roberts – a former Wales international - in the face of mounting criticism of his performances from supporters, is understood to have been a factor in his sacking.

But after overcoming that difficult beginning to earn the respect of his team-mates, as well as the supporters, the talented defender is enjoying the more “relaxed atmosphere” under the new regime.

“With Ronnie getting the job, which we all wanted, it’s straight into next Saturday now,” said Mustoe.

“It takes a bit of the pressure off us.

“He’s got us all working well in training.

“It’s all a bit more relaxed.

“He’s got us feeling nice and confident, so I think we have got a good month ahead.

“No offence to Blackie (Kevin Blackwell), he was a good manager, but we’ve all come in relaxed this past week.

“It just wasn’t happening for us, even though we had some good games under him, we’ve all just relaxed a bit and had more confidence in our play.”

That good vibe was evident in the impromptu goal celebration following William Edjenguele’s late headed winner at Wycombe, which ended a run of 10 matches without a win for Bury that started a month before Mustoe’s arrival at the club.

The entire squad, barring goalkeeper Brian Jensen, slid on their knees in front of the joyous Bury fans.

“It wasn’t rehearsed, we were all just over excited and a bit relieved,” he admitted.

“It was four games without a goal (and nine without a win) so we were all just made up. “It was a great end to score at and I’m sure that now there will be many more goals to come.”
