I HAVE to take my hat off to the chairman. I said the board had to make a decision quickly and to be fair to Stewart Day and co they have stuck their neck out and done it.
Appointing Ronnie Jepson until January was a brave move, but I believe it was the right one.
It gives the club stability and will allow Ronnie the chance to stamp his own identity on the team.
He has already done that in the short time he been in charge and I was really pleased to see the boys get the result they deserved on Saturday.
It was an important win because a lot of the other teams around them are starting to pick up points, but I thought the manner in which they won was also significant.
In a lot of the matches I have seen this season, Bury started well but fizzled out as the game went on.
This time, Wycombe who started off well, but Bury grew stronger as the game went on and that is a really good sign.
Ronnie will need a few more results to get the job, but the good thing about his trial, as opposed to being made caretaker boss indefinitely, is that he knows he will be given time to prove himself.
If Bury go and lose five in a row I am sure the board will step in, but they have also given themselves time to get the right man in if Ronnie doesn’t work out.
The early signs are positive though. I felt it was important to trim the squad down and Ronnie has made that his first job.
He knows he can’t afford to keep older players kicking their heels in the stands watching football matches. They need to be playing games, for their mental attitude as well as the match practice.
Sending players out on loan is not as easy as it sounds, you need the right contacts and it needs to be handled the right way, but he looks to be doing that.
I also understand the club has some good youngsters in the youth ranks and they need to be able to see a route to the first team.
A place on the bench will be seen as a prize for youngsters such as Regan Walker, while for older players it may feel like a punishment.
At the moment, it looks like Ronnie is managing that balancing act just right.
