DANNY Mayor will bid to prove new caretaker boss Ronnie Jepson wrong if he gets the nod to start at Wycombe Wanderers tomorrow.
The 23-year-old winger – on loan from Sheffield Wednesday – replaced Tommy Miller at half time in Bury’s 0-0 draw at home to Mansfield on Tuesday.
And he is expected to start his first game under Jepson if Miller fails to recover from the shoulder injury he picked up in the first half against the Stags.
But the Leyland-born midfielder accepts that his form must improve if he wants to hold on to the shirt.
“To get my best form I need to play more consistently,” said Mayor, who has started just one of the last seven matches. “Being in and out has not been the best, but neither has my form so I have got to improve.
“My end product has been lacking. I’ve got past my man but put the ball out of play, which is not good enough really.”
Jepson believes the poor form of Mayor and his fellow wide men is to blame for Bury’s lack of goals, having failed to score in their last four matches.
That has had an impact on results, with the Shakers in the middle of a nine-game winless streak. But Jepson believes both those runs will come to an end tomorrow if his midfielders can get their delivery right.
“We have got the ball in wide areas, but if there is one criticism, it might be our final ball at times.
“We do ever so well at times to get to where we want to be, but it’s that final ball into the box.
“No disrespect, you are going to get that at this level. They are not all world beaters at this level, so you have to put up with that and just try and improve them and encourage them.”
Bury will have to do without their most influential winger, Craig Jones, for the third game in succession after he failed to recover from a groin strain.
